Community Advisory Board
The Health Through Art Community Advisory Board (CAB) meets the 4th Thursday of each month, (kids welcome!)to share a meal and guide the project's manager in making both procedural and aesthetic decisions about project activities such as the design of upcoming media campaigns using winning artwork, creating social media presence, focus of upcoming calls for art, and imagining the future of Health Through Art. Artist in Residence/Health Through Art
Darren Linzie has been drawing since he was two years old. He enjoyed making examples of popular comic books at the age of 10 when he decided to go into business for himself with his own comic book characters in 1982 to eventually form a line of comics with 300(+) characters. He's written and drawn over 50 comic books with over 100(+) stories told. With art motivates him to think freely and create stories and characters that represents the community and ancestry, and imagine a future the world as a better place to live.
Also an Hip-Hop artist, Darren went on to make six semi and two professional albums which helped him receive an Alameda County Innovations Award for young adult mentally disabled consumers get into the recording industry and also given them a forum to voice their daily mental problems in a seminar session. “It takes the trauma out of the cares and stresses of the illness.” Says Darren
As a consumer, Darren has overcome many issues of homelessness and stigma to become an active member of HHREC. He is happy to be an Artist in Residence at Health Through Art and offers his services as an artist to bay area mental health providers.
Kelly Stenhoff
Kelly Stenhoff is no stranger to community development, having spent two years as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer teacher at a secondary school in rural Tanzania and having thereafter worked as a non-profit program specialist helping organizations understand the human-level outcomes of donor-supported agricultural programs in sub-Saharan Africa. Kelly has more than 10 years of diverse experience in areas including collective impact, monitoring and evaluation, entrepreneurial support programs, agricultural research and extension, and secondary school education.
Before joining the Community Advisory Board of Health through Art in May 2016, Kelly sought to quench a thirst for learning and understanding Oakland through volunteering at Impact Hub Oakland as a work trader; participating in All-In Alameda County, an innovation incubator within county government; and supporting Global Girl Media's Oakland chapter. Originally from rural Minnesota, Kelly attended school at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and Carnegie Melon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Kelly favorite form of self expression and creativity is photography and in her spare time she also enjoys hiking, yoga, meditation, strength training, travel, and capoeira.
Barbara Howard
Ms. Barbara Howard has been serving families, youth, young adults and communities for over 27 years as a community activist, life coach, mentor and event planner. In these roles she has impacted and touched many lives in the greater Bay Area. "Ms. B" is also an entrepreneur, radio host, poet, author, mom, and Founder & CEO of BH Brilliant Minds Project Inc., a nonprofit organization that "Embraces The Minds of the Youth Towards Excellence". Ms. B believes we all have a role in encouraging empowering and uplifting our youth as future leaders who stand on integrity, dignity and self-respect.
She loves creating opportunities for the youth to tell their own stories and showcase their gifts and talent. She produces her own radio show on YALRADIO.FM called "The Eyes of the Conscious Soul" with Sistah B Mellow. Responding to the call from her ancestors she has founded & coordinated The Oakland Juneteenth festival for over 16 years, keeping African-American History legacy alive.
Taylor Smith
Taylor Smith is a young adult in the Bay Area with the major goal of changing the future of our African American youths. She works at Sobrante Park Elementary teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade. Taylor also graduated from Oakland School for the Arts; therefore art is no stranger to her. She believes that through art we can change the mind of our youth, and give them something to hope for.
In her freshmen year in high school art was introduced to Taylor, and they instantly fell in love. She has completed several plays and one novel. Taylor loves to writes because she believes that is the only way she can be heard. On the Cab, Board Taylor believes she can fulfill her goal to change the minds our youth, and fulfill her passion. Though Cab Taylor can use art to hear others, encourage others, and change the future of our world.
