Culture Broker Academy

Is a trauma-informed, social-change six week experience designed to empower our youth to become “Culture Brokers” in their communities. This youth oriented strategy addresses the mental health needs and concerns caused by high levels of trauma in their communities. Through cultural knowledge taught in the Academy youth are able to increase their resiliency, learn to problem solve, and build confidence in making choices that support their wellness and healthy connections in their communities.

Spring 2017 Recap

We asked. We Learned. We Shared.

Congratulations to the Culture Broker Academy graduates of 2017.

Most appropriately, this used African symbology to choose their name: The Sankofa Griots.

This group consisted of several hip hop and visual artist. Though several faced housing insecurity, they found strength in the range of knowledge and skills they have picked up over the year.

The TAY greatly appreciate nature, from the local sage and rosemary bushes, to the giant redwoods of Oakland. They also enjoy creative expression, from dance to poetry.

The graduation was a family celebration, the food was amazing (thanks Bissap Baobob), the vibe was HERITAGE.

The next academy will be launching some time in Fall 2017, so be on the lookout for the steps and details.

Fall 2016 Recap

We Came. We Conquered. We Grew.

Congratulations to the Culture Broker Academy graduates of 2016.

Most appropriately, this group of Kings and Queens came up with the namesake for their cohort = "INNER-G"

When asked Venus Morris of this dynamic group about the name, she explained that "Inner-G" stands for the "Inner God/Goddess" that we all possess.  It also illuminates that "Inner Greatness" from which we all come from and strive to be.  The graduation was beautiful, the food was delicious (thanks Kingston11), the vibe was right and love was strong.  The next academy will be launching some time in spring 2017, so be on the lookout for the steps and details. As for now, this group of dynamos have been brokering their skill sets back into the community, home and the workplace.  Congrats again and we look forward to the next successful academy.
